Club History
Northstate Mycological Club was founded on July 31, 1996. The founding meeting, held at Sayner-Plum Lake town hall, was attended by nine mushroom enthusiasts; Nils Tunestan, Doris Minnich, Ed and Alice Polasek, Arnie and Jean Rein, Edward and Mary Nowicki and Cora Mollen. Additional individuals joined the group that year including Robert Getzlaff, Anne Harding, Carol Christensen, Jana Jirak and Don and Ruth Ludwig, George and Carol Lacharite and John Kalbus. The goal members set for the club was promotion of an understanding and enjoyment of Northwoods mushrooms through field experience, shared personal and cultural knowledge, and continued study.
Over the past years of club activity, members have participated in regular summer forays, presented educational workshops and programs, collected, studied and photographed hundreds of the mushrooms that occur in the Northwoods. More than 250 men and women have participated in activities as club members over the years and many guests were welcomed to join in club programs. Present membership: 250 individuals with about 60+ active members.
